Narcotic drugs and alcohol are psychoactive substances which, when overused can cause the body to become dependent on them. This is commonly known as addiction. Once the body becomes addicted to such psychoactive substances, it becomes difficult to abruptly stop and this leads to a stage where extreme discomfort is caused to the dependent known as withdrawal.

Drug and alcohol addiction is fatal if not treated; this is where addiction counselling takes over and saves the dependent from a toxic demise. There are treatment centers, rehabilitation centers and hospitals which undertake addiction treatment. These centers slowly reduce the dosage of drugs and alcohol consumed by a person who is addicted so as to reduce his dependency on such substances, in a way he is ‘weaned off’ the substance he is addicted to.

Alcohol treatment is most successful when counseling is also a method adapted to treat addiction. Group and individual counseling is the most widely used forms of counseling. While being counseled in a group, an addict realizes that there are other people in a similar situation who are recovering as well. Individual counseling enables the addict and counselor to interact with each other and this helps the client to become a normal and functioning member of society.

There are many experienced individuals who are experienced in the field of rehabilitating addicts; these individuals even offer counseling services. Addiction counseling is designed to change the lifestyle of an addict and guide him toward normalcy so that he is able to carry out his routinely functions.

Many experts believe that addiction is a progressive disease that can be dangerous if not treated. There are many instances where medication is also administered to patients to help them recover and to ease their discomfort. De-addiction also helps individuals realize that they have personal strengths to reject drugs and alcohol.

Drug addiction is a vexing problem in many countries. The fight against addiction is a battle the entire country is waging. Successful rehabilitation is the most effective solution to such a persistent problem. Frequent counseling helps the addict to recover over time and to conquer his addiction and live an addiction free life.
